Film: We Are The Radical Monarchs | 2019 | Ladylike Films | Dir. Linda Goldstein Knowlton | 95min

Set in Oakland, a city with a deep history of activist movements, the film documents the formation of The Radical Monarchs - an alternative to the Scout movement for girls of color, aged 8-13. Its members earn badges for completing units on areas of social justice.  The group, started by Anayvette Martinez and Marilyn Hollinquest, is anchored in the belief that adolescent girls of color need dedicated spaces and that the foundation for innovative social justice work must be rooted in fierce inter-dependent sisterhood, self-love, and hope.

Speakers:

Anayvette Martinez, co-founder, The Radical Monarchs

Lupita Martinez, graduate, The Radical Monarchs

Linda Goldstein Knowlton, filmmaker

Moderator: LeVar Jones, Minister of Youth and Young Adults, New Macedonia Baptist Church; former Teen Services Director, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington.
